Silhouette – Rimless glasses and sun glasses – trendsetting in manufacture and in design
Everything started 1964 with an idea. Glasses should be more than just a visual aid. It should become a modern accessory to be worn with pleasure. With visions and passion Anneliese and Arnold Schmied started to bring their idea to reality. The company Silhouette and with that, their lifework came to being. Already in 1966 the Silhouette glasses have been sold in many European countries and in Canada. Within a very short time, Silhouette made in Linz/Austria conquers the American continent and Asia. In the mid 80s Silhouette developed the Futura-series, extravagant sun glasses in garish colors with huge lenses, in a limited edition. These glasses represented something completely unprecedented and Silhouette pulled-of a great coup by having designed one of the trendiest sun glasses, which are up to today a coveted collector’s item. 1978 two of the four children of the couple joined the company, Arnold and Klaus Schmied. They bring in fresh ideas and shortly thereafter the first rimless glasses collection is introduced to the market, Silhouette Freeline. By participation of the Italian designer Massimo Iosa Ghini with his exclusive sun glasses collection, Silhouette gains the Austrian State Prize for Design in 1991.
Under the influence of the creative head, Matteo Thun, 1992 the first glasses without rims, without hinges made from titanium are produced, the Minimal Art collection. Silhouette continues to try out and develop and within the next few years, the first rimless titanium glasses which do not need hinges and screws, for example the models 8642 and 8109, were produced. The NASA is thus excited about this ultra light, only 1,8 g weighing glasses model that in 2000, they choose the Titanium Minimal Art as standard glasses for astronauts. Even in zero gravity the Titanium Minimal Art guarantees a perfect hold. Since the year 2008 Silhouette is solely specialized on rimless glasses and sunglasses. Innovation and revolution, these terms stand for the enterprise and his owners, now as always.
